Frequently Asked Questions
Here are some answers to common questions. If you have a different question you can Contact Us.
Rather than holding large amounts of stock, NZGR operates primarily on a made-to-order basis. This allows us to keep quality high and offer a wider range of models.
Many of our 3D-printed components are produced overseas. Because of the size of garden railway models, shipping costs can be significant, so we consolidate production into monthly manufacturing runs to keep costs as low as possible for customers.
Once components arrive in New Zealand, each model is carefully assembled, painted, and decaled before being sent to you.
Typical delivery timeframe:
Orders are placed with our overseas suppliers in the first week of each month. Depending on when you place your order, please allow 4–8 weeks for delivery.
All wheels are currently 3D printed and designed specifically for reliable garden railway operation.
- Standard flange depth: 1.5 mm (equivalent to Gauge 1 standards)
- Optional flange depths: 2.0 mm or 2.5 mm (available on request)
Wagon wheels are produced true to scale. If your layout uses non-standard track and requires a wider tyre profile, just let us know when ordering. Locomotive wheels are wider and designed to run smoothly on all common proprietary G gauge track systems.
Looking ahead, if demand allows, we plan to offer stainless-steel tyres with 3D-printed centres as an upgrade option.
Every wheelset supplied with wagons, carriages, and locomotives includes roller bearings, helping ensure smooth operation, reduced wear, and minimal maintenance.
Most models are supplied ready to run, with the exception of our ply-laminated J wagons, which require assembly. Larger buildings also come as a flat pack.
If you prefer to complete the finishing yourself, an unpainted option is available and can be selected when ordering.
Our locomotives are designed for battery-powered radio control operation. Due to the use of 3D-printed wheels, they are not configured for track power as standard. Advanced modellers may choose to convert them using methods such as conductive coatings, electroplating, or wheel wipers.

You can request specific wagon or locomotive numbers when placing your order. Available liveries and paint schemes can be selected from the options shown on each product page.
