Introduced between 1955 and 1956, the DG class diesel-electric locomotives were designed to modernize New Zealand Railways’ fleet during the transition away from steam. Built by English Electric in the UK, these locomotives combined compact size with impressive versatility, making them ideal for both mainline and branch line duties.

• Power & Performance: Each DG was equipped with a 1,060 hp English Electric engine, delivering the torque needed for steep grades and heavy freight while remaining nimble enough for passenger services.
• Design: With a Co-Co wheel arrangement, the DG offered excellent traction and stability, a crucial advantage on New Zealand’s varied terrain.
• Service Life: The class became a backbone of NZR operations, working across both islands for decades. Their adaptability meant they could haul everything from timber and coal to commuter trains.
• Legacy: Though withdrawn by the late 1980s, several DG locomotives survive in preservation, cherished by heritage railways and enthusiasts as symbols of New Zealand’s diesel era.
